DDoS stands for distributed denial of service, simply means when for example a website is not able to provide its services due to a very heavy load of traffic. Many prominent websites as well as banks websites often come in way of a DDoS. DDoS attacks are costing very low that’s why its in the hands of the attacker to put it in motion. But today many methods have developed to prevent such attacks.

What is a DDoS Attack?

DDoS attack is carried out by attackers to make computers resources inaccessible to its users. The attacker never uses his computer for these attacks rather he create a network of Zombie Computers also called as “Botnet”. Botnet is a hive of computers to make a website or web server down.

How a DDoS Works?
Every website has a certain limit of providing services to a limited numbers of users at a specific time. When this limit exceeds the website can be downed easily.
First the attacker notifies all computers on botnet to keep in touch with a particular website or web server, time and again. This activity increases  traffic on website and slow down the speed of the website for all its users. A time comes when traffic is really high which lead a site to shut down completely, because the site is not able to take such load at a time.

Basic steps to prevent DDoS Attack
There are many ways to prevent a DDoS attack but I will cover some basic of them. Here are the three basic ways to prevent a DDoS.

     1.       By Buying More Bandwidth:
Basic steps to prevent DDos attack

To service the requests you have to buy more bandwidth, its costy but provide much security. A sufficient bandwidth on web will allow you to tackle lots of low scale DDoS attacks. Let suppose you have 5,000 computer systems each distributing 1Mbps directed towards your way, which means you are getting 5 GB that is hitting your web server any second that causes a lot of traffic.

To avoid such problem, you should have more web servers, just multiply around diverse data centers  and then balance the load on each. Spreading your load on various servers  helps balance the load and creates a large space enough to handle a high increase in trafficThere may come a problem this way as it’s a costy method and today DDoS attacks are getting large, yet this is an effective method.

     2.       Look for more DDoS mitigation/protection services:
Lots of internet service promise for DDoS protection realtime. Look for a service provider with high trust of DDoS protection tools, with a team of talented anti-DDoS technicians who can handle a DDoS in a realtime attack.

     3.       Restrict the community:

If your computer systems are connected to web directly, then its good to install and configure a reliable router and firewall to put a limit to connectivity.
For example when you receive data from a client machine you can only allow the traffic through some chosen ports like HTTP,SMTP,POP etc. through the firewall.
